current -- from nearly 200 countries in new york. it is monday, september 20th, 2010. as we take a live look over washington, d.c. this morning. good morning. thank you for waking up with fox 5 morning news. i'm sarah simmons in for gurvir. >> i'm steve chenevey. three schools in anne arundel county closed today. chesapeake high school, chesapeake bay middle school and folger mckinsey elementary school. all other anne arundel county schools will open on time today. it appears the east coast will avoid the wrath of hurricane igor. the category one storm barely missed bermuda and is now making its way up the atlantic so shen away from the northeastern united states. it pelted bermuda with rain and knocked out electricity in many parts of the island. forecast ares say igor will continue causing high surf and strong rip currents along the eastern seaboard.

let's check in on our forecast here. tonydowns us once again. should be pretty nice. >> just want to mention in terms of igor and bermuda. although the eye of the storm did not pass over bermuda, still, bermuda got quite an impact from igor and we don't want to minimalize that. wind blowing up to 93 miles per hour on that island. so problems there. we'll show you igor in just a moment. we'll show you the local satellite-radar. it can be seen in some of our satellite-radars for the mid atlantic and the northeastern united states. for us here this morning, a few clouds coming through here and there but for the most part, clear skies. we are going to see mostly sunny skies for the day today. nothing in the way of precipitation even know a cold frontal boundary came through not too long ago. it produced no rain nor were we expecting it to. current temperatures, 70 degrees in washington. 66 at patuxent naval air station. # 7 at dulles airport. 67 in baltimore. your bus stop forecast for this

guys continue northbound up towards duke street. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. questions continue to swirl this morning about the death of a man in frederick, mearlgd. police there called to a hem on south market street three times to break up a fight between a man and woman. -- in frederick, maryland. police say oliver cohen fired a shot as officers were talking to him so one officer fired. it is not clear whether cohen actually killed himself. >> the gunshot was heard by the officers responding and at this point, everything of that nature is still under investigation by our criminal investigation division and some of those determining as are yet to be made. the woman involved was transported to the hospital for minor injuries. an autopsy is being done to determine whether or not the gunshot that killed cohen was self-inflicted or the result of an officer's fire. >> in leesburg, a 911 call about a fall now is a murder investigation. police got the call that the

wife of steven combs la fleur had fallen. when they arrived, they realized she had been beaten to death. for the first time in nearly 100 years, a woman is set to be executed in virginia. theresa lewis is scheduled to die on thursday. she pleaded guilty in 2003 two- to-two counts of capital murder for hire. her husband and stepson were the victims. world leaders are gearing up for the general assembly of the united nations in new york this week. all eyes will be on iranian president mahmoud ahmadinejad who is known for his controversial remarks which include taxes on the u.s. and israel. ahmadinejad is calling efforts to end his current are you's nuclear program pathetic. secretary of state hillary clinton says iran is suffering because of those sanctions. >> the information we're getting is that the iranian regime is quite worried about the impact on their banking

system, on their economic growth because they've already encountered some tough economic times and this is making it more costly. >> reporter: ahmadinejad says he is not blocking inspects from the u.n. but the international atomic energy agency says its inspectors have not been allowed to do her job. sarah shourd is speaking out about her year spent in a prison in iran. she was released last week. shure is now back on american soil but her mind still on the other two americans being held in iran. she left behind her fiance and their friend. >> i came before you today only one-third free. that was the last thing josh said to me before i walked through the prison doors. we committed no crimes an we are not spies. >> the three were hiking along the iran-iraq border in july

in d.c. 69 here. 69 in annapolis. dulles airport as 66. here is a look at the satellite- radar composite for the region. there is hurricane igor that you can see on the screen. awfully close to the u.s., isn't it in it is not going to make landfall anywhere along the u.s. it is moving to the north-northeast. but we are seeing rip currents, high tides, higher than normal tides is what i should say along the east coast. so you want to be aware of that. folk are recommending that people don't go out in the water because of the rip current effect. meanwhile, across the mid- atlantic, we've had a couple of clouds but we appear to be mostly cloud-free for the bulk of the day. beautiful this afternoon.

york with this morning's business beat. modest gains like we said last week, how do you think the week is going to start out? are we looking good here? >> we are looking good here. futures are indicating that stocks will open higher this morning. europe has been trading higher so this is all a good indicator. but really, we can go anywhere. forget what happens at the opening. the question is what happens on tuesday with the federal reserve on interest rates and no one expects them to raise them. but also some of the economic data we'll get this week will all weigh heavily on what happens with trading. >> talk a little bit about the committee that is meeting on tuesday. what do we really expect to come out of. this they do have a lot of control over many things that do affect your lives. what do we think could happen coming out of this? >> the federal open market committee is made up the of the save governors of the seven

governors. banks bother moany from the federal reserve and that interest rate they set sets the rate for what banks charge each other when they lend money. it eventually trickles down to you and me in the form of what happens with with our credit cards and eventually mortgage rates. no one expects that incident rhett -- interest rate to go up. they are looking about whether the federal reserve is concerned about the economy growing or the economy continuing to contract and if they're going to try and stop deflation. a lot of people say there is no deidentification. but if they talk about pouring more money into the system, it means they're worried about deidentification and that could be real trouble for the stock market. so we'll be watching that meeting a lot. of a always joked, fortress fed is so hard to get into, it is kind of like studio 54 in the 1980s. you just can't get in. >> i want to mention real quick

powerful typhoon has made landfall in eastern china after dumping four feet of rain in parts of taiwan. officials say up to 44 inches of rain have fallen on the certain part of the island with more to come. that is unbelievable to think about that much rain. >> the problem is it is a very slow-moving storm. most storms move through, they do the damage they'll do. it is taking its time moving through so rain is hitting the same areas. >> we wish we could see some rain. nothing like that but we could use a little bit of it. >> er with down for the year. we are down for the month. and you know, we won't see any significant rainfall. we might not see any rainfall at all this week the way things are looking right now. so we could use some precipitation. right now, here is what is happening with the current conditions being reported at reagan national airport where our temperature did drop off just a short time ago. we are now at 69 degrees. relative humidity, 75%.

and they also found, police say, 28-year-old olivier cohen in a parking area. >> as they were trying to approach him to make contact with him, a shot was fired and the officer felt that he was in danger at that point and responded to that shot firing several rounds. >> police say the officer who fired at cohen is a four-year veteran on the force. he has been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation. if leesburg, virginia, what began as a 911 call about a fall is now a murder investigate. police got that call saturday that the wife of steven combs la fleur had fallen at their home. but when they arrived, they realized she had been beaten to death. he is now charged with first degree murder and is being held without bond. college park is hit with

weather guys. tucker barnes and i put our big heads together to answer your most pressing questions, weather-related or otherwise. today's questions comes from 14- year-old chris in stafford, virginia. he asks, although it could be a woman, a girl. so he or she asks, i notice that once igor developed an eye t stayed if a while and then closed up again. i also observed this in hurricane danielle and hurricane earl. why does this happen? is there a name for it? also, whenever a hurricane is fully developed, i notice what likes feather is on the outside of the storm. why do hurricanes do this? good questions, chris. someone would is very observe and. all right. we'll talk about the eye wall first. very observant. yes, these eye walls, especially with the bigger hurricanes, in fact, primarily with the bigger hurricanes, they drop, you see them and they break down and then a new one develops. this is called the eye wall replacement cycle.

tucker knows a lot about this as well. this is something -- tucker, i'm correct in saying this occurs mainly with the big storms, right? >> major hurricanes. >> we are seeing more and more major hurricanes, scientists have more opportunities to observe this. >> the truth of matter -- can you hear me? >> we can sort of hear you. >> i sort of hear you. >> this is a look at hurricane -- this is earl. >> this is hurricane earl and you will see the eye wall break down and then re-form. it is because during the course -- as the storm develops, sometimes that eye wall loses some of its intensity, begins to break down. scientists don't know exactly why this happens yet. there are several theories but they don't know exactly why it happens yet and then it will build up again. are you better now? still not better. okay. that really impacts the ability to do this segment. but that is what happens with

the eye wall. now, what was another question? he note is feathering on the outside of the storm. >> i'll take over. this is fascinating stuff. this is outflow. so what happens isage the eye wall around the center of the storm is a chimney. the air comes up and out of the top of t that is the offshoot. all that air gets spread out along the upper layer of the atmosphere. that forms cirrus clouds and that is your outflow. >> very natural with any hurricane. you see these tightly wound hurricanes which tend to be smaller and you don't see as much of that feathering but it can happen. that outflow will impact the weather around the hurricane, even impacting, as we saw with julia, other hurricanes that are close by. kind of robs that second arrestee hurricane of some of its energy and it is not allowed to develop as much. there you go. very good oaks, chris. you are right on it. i think you have a future in weather. >> meteorologist in training. absolutely. >> absolutely f you have i question you want answered, go

avenue. university boulevard at arlin avenue for a accident possibly involving a pedestrian. the former agriculture department executive forced to resign from her job because of a youtube video spoke out about her ordeal. shirley sherrod was forced to quit after a video posted by a blogger misrepresented her message on kiss des christmas nation. she spoke at a d.c. church and karen gray houston was there. >> this church has hosted statesmen and civil rights leaders. it is undergoing a major renovation. that did not stop scherrly sherrod from retelling her story. >> this person was e-mailing me saying you should be ashamed of yourself. >> reporter: sherrod is still hauntedded by this video. it was a speech she gave to the naacp but a conservative blogger posted excerpts that seemed to show she withheld

assistance from a georgia farmer because he was white. >> i just knew the administration would support me. >> reporter: sherrod was talking about her own racial transformation but the truth did for the get out until she was forced to resign. president obama apologized. she declined an offer to go back to agriculture p. she says she is suing the blogger. >> do the right thing and god will help you through any situation. >> reporter: folk who heard her remarks had this to say. >> it gives us a new perspective on how people are being treated. >> she spoke directly to life, pain, the ability to be able to believe beyond what is possible. >> she says, if you do things right, from the beginning, it will work out in the end. >> we have to reach out, reach back and help. you never know. you could be helping the second black president of the united
